From the July 2012 Grateful Dead Bulletin:

"Visit dead.net tomorrow afternoon, 08.01.12, for a very special announcement."

Any guesses? For lack of any better ideas, mine is that the entire Spring 1977 tour is being made available for purchase by show or as a package in FLAC/mp3 downloads. No--that makes too much sense.

The picture in the email has a skull with a Indian head dress on. Is this a hint?

Interesting thought. I have to admit I hadn't even noticed the Indian head (no lie). Searching venues and cities in setlists.net, The Seminole Indian Village shows from May 1969 are the only ones with either "indian", "reservation", or "nation" in the name. My next thought is it could refer to Oklahoma (formerly the Indian Territories). Here are the Oklahoma shows in setlists.net:

11/14/72- Oklahoma City Music Hall - Oklahoma City, OK
11/15/72- Oklahoma City Music Hall - Oklahoma City, OK
10/19/73- Fairgrounds Arena - Oklahoma City, OK (DP19)
10/11/77- Lloyd Noble Center (University Of Oklahoma) - Norman, OK (partially released on DP29 and RT1.2)
02/06/79- Tulsa Fairgrounds Pavilion - Tulsa, OK
07/05/81- Zoo Amphitheater - Oklahoma City, OK
08/01/82- Zoo Amphitheater - Oklahoma City, OK
09/02/85- Zoo Amphitheater - Oklahoma City, OK

Any of those particularly strong? Or any other thoughts what an Indian head could mean (if it's a release rather than a tour being hinted at)?

Less grandiose and thus more realistic than mine. Equally welcome, though IMO the 12th and 13th are just okay--or am I not listening to those in the right places? I don't think I've listened to the 14th. Is it just in AUD?

Don't know about a full blown fall tour but Furthur is playing Shoreline Sept. 30.Maybe that is considered late summer. In agreement with wisconsindead would dig a 68 box set.

Too much setlist sameness for a 68 box set, I think, though I'd go for August 21-22 Fillmore West shows if they released them. They've already mined the Jan-Feb Northwest tour with the RT2.2 extra tracks and bonus disc.

It always seems whenever a band announces a "very special announcement" it's about a tour. Like you listen to the radio, and they tease you with a "listen Thursday after 5pm for a very special announcement" and it's about Poison or Aerosmith touring.

So maybe The Dead are doing a fall tour? I don't think there's already a Further, Phil & Phriends, RatDog, etc., tour already planned/announcement?

Well, they ought to do something super-terrific in honor of the woulda-been 70th, but I'm guessing it'll be lame. Hope I'm wrong.

Some thoughts:

Something to do with the GD movie they've been promoting for Jerry's b-day. That would figure.

They could announce a show with All the Survivors. Granted, that would be weird under the circumstances ("in celebration of the fact that Jerry would have been 70 if he had made it, we'll play without him!") but it could happen as a one-shot thing.

But what's with the Indian skull? That's a Plains Indian war bonnet, so it shouldn't connect to Florida or Alaska or any location except somewhere on the Great Plains (not that anyone at Deadnet probably cares about historical or anthropological accuracy, LOL). It could definitely refer to the 8/1/82 40th birthday show in Oklahoma, but how would that be a "very special announcement"? I guess they could box the '82 summer tour, which was in the Great Plains, but the Alpine Valley is already out as DP 32.

I guess the Indian head could also relate to the drummers. So that goes back to the one-shot reuniting idea.

It won't be Orpheum '76 cuz that doesn't relate to either the date or Indians. Ditto Spring '77, Fall '72, etc.

Did the whole band ever perform at shows with the shaman Rolling Thunder? Um, uh, some people see "Sunrise" as relating to Rolling Thunder ... hey, maybe it is Spring '77 after all! The Very Best Sunrises! (Is that a convoluted reach or what?)

Fall 1972 box set! yea im a dreamer. Actually I'd probably rather a 1968 box set, or for it to be the next road trips release.

That indian skull is quite the cool image may I add.

Nevermind. I'm convinced that this afternoon's announcement is for the Spring '90 Tour. On the Sirius/XM Grateful Dead channel this morning, David Lemieux just happened to select a random Spring 90 bunch of songs from Landover. He was also raving about how great the whole Spring '90 tour was...Foreshadowing much??

Of course, the one song I really wanted to hear was the breakout of Loose Lucy on 3/14, but that's not part of this collection...

Still, I might buy it...
